Japan bans WiFi gaming portables onboard aircraft
Apabrita | Sep 8 2008

If you are traveling through Japanese airspace with you wireless gaming device, beware! Japan has recently banned these WiFi gaming devices on board aircrafts. So no more in flight gaming for the kids as well as adults flying a Japanese airliner.

The Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS have been recently banned by the lawmakers of Japan. This is because the pilots and Japanese aviation authorities fear that the low-power signals in these devices could affect the aircraft electronics and hamper flight controls.

Surprisingly, it took Japan this long to ban these gaming devices. The US has already banned such wireless devices on board. Although, the device is actually banned, the Japanese aircraft passengers will still be able to use these devices but with the wireless feature turned off. From now on flight attendants will be checking to see if this feature is turned off.

I think this is just the start of aviation backfiring the wireless devices. I can’t really blame them though. It’s always safety first while you are up in the air. Devices without wireless facility is just fine. Whether this ban is due to sheer paranoia, it’s debatable.
